Cym. pumilum (floribundum) '80'

Post by MrCym »

Well I am so busy currently that I have little posting time. However the good news is that I have this plant establishing in the greenhouse. The varietal name is given to match the flower count on the spike!!! Something tells me that Cym. pumilum hybrids are going to get a big shake-up.

That is quite exciting. I’m guessing this will be the same Cym. pumilum we saw a pic of 18 months ago in China?.
It will go a long way to addressing some of the intermediate lines from the past with somewhat short flower counts (e.g., Showgirl)

Another project for you until you turn ‘80’.

Ha ha, 80 years is rather close. It's not actually the exact same plant but another in a small population of extraordinary floriferousness discovered by Professor Jiang Hong. This Scientist was a great joy to meet and interact with. He knows the Yunnan area intimately and has a University greenhouse filled with fascinating species including special Cymbidiums. He is a dedicated conservationist who also recognizes the need for propagation and distribution of special forms of the various area species. He gave me a book I could barely lift that I look forward to reading as I find some time. My friend, Susu Furuya, is his friend and supporter. Expect great orchid things from both orchid men!
