James Rose
The Buddhist Monks who share a home on the Cal-Orchid Nursery have released the sad news that James Rose has passed from this world. James and I were friends for over 50 years so I am very sad to finally hear this news. James was, in my opinion, one of the broadest knowledge orchid persons of my lifetime. He was hard-working, honest, humorous, direct, artistic etc. he and I traveled together, participated in some memorable orchid occasions and laughed a lot. Sadly, we will not see his like again.
To Lauris, my thoughts and prayers. I'm sure she will be almost overwhelmed with offers of assistance and with her organizational skills, this support will be invaluable.

Very sad news indeed Andy. I must have met him for the first time in the late 70's or early 80's. James made a huge impression on me, not only did he know orchids I had (still) never heard of, he also had a Californian swagger, half hippie, half business, whole human, that gave me a lasting impression.
Like you said: great sense of humor and honest to the core. I’m sure they’ll welcome him with open arms in the great greenhouse in the sky, but I’ll miss him.

James is a real passionate orchid grower, a wonderful person with lot of knowledge about orchids and he always tried his best to support new orchid growers. Cal Orchids openhouse years ago was also the place where I first met Andy, made me do a lot more research on Cymbidium and really see how beautiful Cymbidium are to became a big fan of Cymbidium since that time...

Very sad news Andy ! I remember James for his phantastic efforts in line-breeding Laelia anceps and creating varieties & clones that were truly out of this world. I believe some of these clones have even been used by him & others in breeding the wonderful hybrids that L. anceps is known for. Meeting him only once left a lasting impression on me of a very kind, knowledgeable and generous guy who truly loved his wife, his family, and what he was doing.
Another orchid giant has left the building - Vale James, and be happy, wherever you may be !

Just back from a short break away, and it was saddening to hear of James passing. Made even more so by dying at a relatively young age.
I note Mr Cym has posted another passing of an Orchid enthusiast today, and it is thanks to him and all his connections in this somewhat shrinking world that we hear and stay upto date with all current events. Well done.

It is always sad to learn of the passing of those who have devoted their lives to orchids. Thanks for the video triggered a memory, Lauris referred to them as 'poor mans 'orchids, you can find them growing outside in the warmer parts of the country. The common colors that I have seen are orange, pink and red. Small sized flowers and unlike the Cal Orchid lines quite spaced on the spike and not as tall. Suspect ignored by 'dedicated' orchid growers, never seen these at any orchid show that I have attended.
