Predictions…….

Post by MrCym »

Well l think l still have a pretty good orchid antenna! When the EYOF started selling orchids at the Malvern Show in 2023, l knew bad things were on the horizon. Now Chris Purver is gone and they’re closed while desperately looking around for a replacement Curator. I knew Eric Young well, a great patron of orchids and a true gentleman. He must be whirring in his grave by now! He had a priceless collection of Chinese snuff boxes which were apparently stolen in an inside job in Jersey. I drove him to judging in LAX one night in a pickup and a bag containing nearly half a million dollars worth of these trinkets Needless to say he took them inside with him!

All is not lost however. The Mathers’ Foundation in the South of England is establishing an orchid display facility that will equal or exceed anything in Jersey so Brits should be very grateful! Maybe the UK may once again gain renown for displays of modern world quality orchids interspersed with classics from yesteryear!

I have great hopes for the Mathers Foundation. They are building very impressive collections of many genera with the help of experts and hybridisers such as you Andy. Probably too late for me to benefit at my age but possibilities for younger growers.

Terry, never too late! I am being deluged with interest locally and it's wonderful. These are serious enthusiasts, at School, University and newly started in their careers. I'm cruising now.... if I croak tomorrow, there's at least nearly a decade worth of pods and seedlings to give the enthusiasts and commercial growers some delight!
