No, no and no again!

Post by MrCym »

My landlord bought in some really miniature Cymbidium clones that are currently in bloom. I was intrigued by the cute flowers but was told the plants are hard to grow and if watered too much in Winter, they just melt away. What is the crossing, I asked? The supplier said the clone was made of a cross between Pee Wee X pumilum. All well and good BUT...... I can clearly see strong suave influence in the hybrid both in the flower and the bulb character. I took a photo this afternoon for the records but I am quite sure the claimed parentage is incorrect. There is one Lab in Australia that is absolutely diabolical for selling mislabeled Cyms generally bred from at least one of the three Australian native species. Given Gary's tale of using plants in situ for making pods, one wonders if the crossers occasionally get their pollen mixed up?? The Lab I speak about has a stock answer: the person who sent in the seed for sowing agreed that we could also sell seedlings to offset their Lab bill and they must have made a mistake. If you ever need to know the name of the Lab, just e-mail me privately. Now, I am not claiming that Lab was the source for the plant I saw today but something has been mixed up big time! And my understanding is that the plant originated as a seedling from Downunder!
