More on 6n hybrids.

Post by MrCym »

Made a couple of pods today with the best lipped Mario Lanza 6n. Just so you can let the idea run through your mind, I used Cym. erythrostylum album as one of the sources of pollen. Why? Well, obviously not seeking alba inheritance as the alba Cym. erythrostylum is locked in forever! Not seeking season as the ML is genetically a late bloomer and the Cym. erythrostylum is an early. Both are excellent growers and free bloomers. The real reason race fans, is that I just needed a different diploid, Cym. erythrostylum has a deficient lip whereas ML is large-lipped and beautifully red, plus we might just chance a double spiking in regular climates, an early spiking followed by a later one. Sometimes one makes a totally whimsical hybridization and here, appropriately on Valentine's Day!

In that we still have to see the first 6n X 2n bloom, the magic may fail spectacularly..... But that's what keeps my adrenaline high.

What is your anticipated timing for the first 6n x 2n blooming Andy?

Gary, I think to be safe I'd better say 18 months. Lot of young plants here so they tend to vanish and then reappear when they spike. I've been potting up large plugs to deep 11 cm pots for two solid days and loving every minute of it. Not a clone in the bunch....... NEW Horizons.

That is a shorter time than I thought -thinking maybe still a couple of years away.

Well Gary, an update. Not a WT combination but the first 6n X @n crossing, Mario Lanza 6n X Cym. insigne 'Manote' 2n passed under my potting stick today and they're likely only 12 months from blooming. The WT combos are a bit farther back.
