Is there a reason why 2022 posts are re appearing. I slipped up and answered one?

I think it is because Florian (wolfman) is way behind in his reading here.

No problem being new to the forum I often go back to check out.

Sorry, but I am not “behind” in my reading, but I search through the forum with Odm.-related keywords, and that’s when often interesting topics from the past are popping up.

What I find “unusual” is that the forum software then seems to re-arrange the sequence of events - I haven’t experienced this in any other forum - can’t this be avoided by changing a few algorithms (I’m not an IT guy, so please apologise if my question is a bit naive) ?

What exactly are you seeing that needs changing? If you reply to an old post your reply will appear at the top of the posts list as all posts appear in "descending date" order by default.

The “appearance in descending date” order seems to be a sticking point here - if I read an old post and respond to it it automatically moves from page XYZ to spot 1 on page 1 (despite being eg. a several year old post).

Personally I don’t mind, as I believe the forum should be a living & breathing thing of learning & information exchange, but I know that eg. Andy hates it if “his” forum is being thrown into disarray by acolytes like me - is there anything that can be done to change the “default modus” to a different modus where an older post stays where it is in the queue, despite being responded to ?

I am not asking this question because I love to be a pain in the proverbial and to upset anyone, but to improve the forum to the point where “old information” can still be worked with, but without changing the order of the posts. Otherwise a response to a “keyword search” completely looses its value for at least me as a forum member.

Many thanks to all of you for your kind help & understanding, much appreciated !

Thanks for your comments wolfman. The issue I see with your proposal is that replies to old posts would never get seen if they are buried layers deep in the order. The way a forum generally works is that the newest information is at the top so that everyone can see that it's new. The proper functioning of the forum would break down otherwise.

I wonder if 'Board Preferences' have a hand in this?

If you click on your member name it drops a box down with options, click User Control Panel, then choose Board Preferences and then Edit Display Options.

After entering into this part of the board members have the option to choose within set parameters how they wish the board/posts to display to them.

Sorry the pic isn't very clear despite taking it from a screenshot.
Regardless, below the area with the blue buttons there is multiple options to choose from how the pages and posts are displayed to the viewer.

The way mine is set up is as you would read a book older posts first, most recent last.

Thanks a million, Diane - I’ll have a play with it to find the best format for me. I didn’t even know that these options exist for the forum, hence I really appreciate these tips.

Thank you !
