I was very interested to see Andy's comment on Facebook where he stated "all the major orchid Viruses are completely deactivated upon ten seconds exposure to a 20% solution of Sodium Hypochlorite!! This is a very recent and encouraging research findings".
I would certainly be interested in find out more details about this treatment. Do you just immerse the complete plant in the solution? If it works, then why not treat every plant to be sure you do not have viruses.

Not the plants unfortunately! Pots, benches, cutting tools, wire stakes etc

Re: Virus hysteria
The only way I'm aware of eradicating virus from plants is during a cloning process, and adding in a few extra steps.
We, with the assistance from some clever people, are currently in the process of doing just this with plants infected with ORSV as it the most prevalent here in Australia, but we are about 9-12 months away from actually having some plants large enough to deflask and test just to prove the process works. There will be an article on www.orchidwise.com about the subject when we have some results to share, however, it's not a foolproof process, you still need to test on the other side to see if it has worked....we may then go on to confirming the process for CymMV and OFV.
I know a couple of labs can do it, but it is a long and somewhat expensive process depending on your point of view. Certainly not for the hobbyist grower! And only really viable for plants that are significant in some way.

Not so! The slow clean-up offered by Chinese and Taiwanese Labs is also very costly. Bob Hamilton’s group have refined the process and apparently reduced the time involved very significantly. But it’s under wraps for now until Bob is ready to make a definitive statement.

That sounds very interesting indeed! I look forward to hearing about it.....MrCym wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2024 7:59 am Not so! The slow clean-up offered by Chinese and Taiwanese Labs is also very costly.
