Grammatophyllum season in BKK

Post by insigne »

Right now, it is mid summer in Thailand. Night time temp in my town is around 27-28 Celsius and 37-38 C. in the afternoon. There are just a very few cymbidiums of hot & cool hybrids in bloom, except the those small flowered, pendulous and leathery leafed species & hybrids which are still in bloom. But Grammatophyllum are blooming profusely and happily right now.

Plants in this picture are some of the selected stud plants:

This season I just found an outstanding plant of Gram. Crownfox Leopard with heavier substance than any others. Flowers are darker in colour and look more handsome.

My initial plan is to cross with some of my tracyanum hybrid. Anyway, I will have to wait until those hybrids in bloom again in October. Another long term plan. :)

These are all pathways to Kobsukh's Grammatocymbidiums. In another decade they will be a totally distinct tropical type.

Just a word of advice: Don't ever go to the in-laws for dinner and compliment the cook with, "That was a great dinner; I imagine you have a very nice oven!" Just sayin'

Using that dramatic flower should impart some new blood into future Cym crosses when using it as a parent. What would be your thoughts along those lines Andy?
