Hexaploids are also fertile and are the only euploid pathway to tetraploidy from a triploid. As such, hexaploids are largely breeders' plants but hexaploid Phalaenopsis are common in their development and to a lesser extent in the Odontoglossum Alliance.

I am just surfing NHO after a rather fine Mother's day and note the depth of this thread. Thanks Andy and all. Very interesting.
Noting that Ploidy is such an important topic - I found this article 20 minutes ago ...and it helped my understanding too. http://www.aos.org/orchids/additional-r ... loidy.aspx
I thought others may be interested too.

Yes. I must agree. Thanks Mark. I shall add it to the list of things to read when I retire. OH! I can't use that as an excuse anymore.
By the way all Aussie readers. Have you all heard the news. The ADELAIDE CROWS were beaten AGAIN this weekend by MELBOURNE by 41 POINTS.
I have read reports using words like pathetic, humiliated, disgraceful .
Never mind Sabre. As the bishop said to the priest......toughen up. Even our Lord had days where he didn't want to get out of bed.

Does Graham barrack for the Crows - he might be a Port fan. I see Adelaide are on top with Port second. Guess which northern based team is bottom of the AFL ladder?

I take it from that reply that he is the Crows #1 supporter!
His team is still on top of the ladder, maybe some of the other forum members based in Melbourne might join him.
