The color red

Post by Albert Nakaji »

Street Hawk 'Garnet' is blooming now and it got me wondering where the intense red color comes from. In the background, I can only see insigne contributing the initial dose of color (way back) and then it becoming intensified. So what's the thinking about where the red actually comes from, and what species causes the intensity?

My feeling is that insigne is indeed the key player with intensification coming from lowianum, i'ansonii, giganteum, even tracyanum underpinning. Also Cym. parishii 'Sanderae' and its tetraploid sidekick, 'EM' pick up red color very easily as in Harriet Ishitani.
