Potting from plugs to a small 4" pot

Post by GaryCAZ »

Showing a typical tray, followed by one of the many buckets we cull out and finally the survivors all newly potted and ready to grow. We plan to slip pot these to gallons later in 2013. At every stage we look for an opportunity to dump the slow growers or runts, always looking to ultimately bloom only "the best of the fastest"!

Andy
I wish I have the luxury to cull off small ones.
I am trying to keep even the smallest ones.
Do you have any opinion to use of square pots.
I potted up around 1000 plants from 10 cms square pots to 15 cms round pots.
The roots in the square pots seems to go down then up again.
There is no full turn in the pot.Is it good or bad?

Fatih,

I don't think there is much difference between round and square pots though my opinion is round should pot up to round and square to square. You tend to have great difficulty in finding larger square sizes.

Remember I am dealing with seedlings, not clones so the slow must go! But even with clones there will be some variation in growth speed, the less original the clonal material, the more problems you will have with runts and mutants.

Wow! Those seedlings look great!
Mine do not grow that well :( I must be doing something wrong.
Are you using sphagnum moss as media?
At what age did you transfer them to bigger pots?

Rodrigo

Yes, only moss wafers, one each side of the plantlets. The tray in question should have been handled in January but we had limited free space and also were very busy with travel and sale plant preparation. They take off so fast if potted at this season! Those plants were defasked in June-July so we should have handled them several months ago. But we had a potting blitz with my "secret weapon" Ugo last Saturday and literally processed thousands of plugs up to 4" pots.

Nice looking plants Andy, you seem to have plenty of bench space now, so hopefully you had sold off a lot of bigger plants.
